Panchatantra fables, translated into about sixty languages of the world, have exercised greater influence on foreign literature than any other branch of Indian writing. In this book, Dr. Varadraj Huilgol has taken into account all the versions of the Panchatantra and has given a critical comparative analysis of them. Two traditions in the history of the Panchatantra fables have been established by the author. One is that of Vishnusharma and the other of Vasubhaga. Vishnusharma’s version is well known to scholars. But it is Vasubhaga’s version – Durgasimha’s Panchatantra, the Sanskrit “Tantropakhyana,” the Tamil “Tantropakyana,” “Tantri,” “Tantai” and “Tantrai” – that are popular in South India, Java, Laos, Thailand and other parts of south-east Asia. Many aspects of the stories have been sculptured in the temples of these places. The locale of Vasubhaga has been fixed by the author as Karnakata in South India and his date as about the first century A.D. He has made use of materials in the literatures of east Asia. The author provides details of Vasubhaga’s life and describes the fascinating journey of Panchatantra fables from India to other parts of the world. As far as is known, this is the first full-length book on Vasubhaga and his fables. It breaks new ground in the wake of Panchatantra studies by scholars such as Franklin Edgerton, George T. Artola and A. Venkatasubbiah. It supplies an important missing link in the study of Indian fable literature.
